10 of the Best Things About Autumn

It appears that autumn is upon us once again.  We were on a walk the other night, and we started talking about some of our favorite things about autumn.  We were having a lovely discussion, and decided that we should share with you our five favorite things about autumn, but then, we were having a really hard time narrowing the list down to five.  We started having a heated debate, which upset our puppy, Ella.  She told us we didn’t need to narrow it down to five, and instead could pick ten.  She is wise beyond her months.  So, without further ado, here are some of our favorite things about autumn.

 1.  Apples

Green apples

All things apples:  apple cider, baked apples, apple crisp, apple pie, apple tarts, you name it!

2.  Squash

Butternut Squash

Our favorite squash is acorn, but butternut squash and spaghetti squash are also amazing.  We love to roast acorn squash in the oven with butter and brown sugar.

3.  Crock Pot

Add to crock pot

We are two weeks into fall and Jeff has already used the crock pot 4 times.  Some of our favorite recipes to make in the crock pot are: Guinness Beef Stew, Turkey Vegetable Soup, Crock Pot French Dips, and Chili.

4.  Halloween

Halloween is my favorite holiday.  (Jeff’s is Christmas.)  I love all of the spooky decorations, creepy movies, and fantastical costumes.  It’s one of the things I look forward to every year.  The food isn’t too bad either.  Pictured above is our Harry Potter Halloween Party Butter Beer Bread Pudding.

5.  Winter Beers Arriving Soon

Fall signals the end of the fruity wheat summer beers that I personally don’t care for.  When the weather gets colder, I like my beer to get darker.  The rich, malty beers of fall and winter keep me warm and satisfied.

6.  Fall Colors

The leaves turning colors is truly one of the greatest things about fall.  The colors are so pretty.  The food even reflects the changing colors, with pumpkin and squash as front-runners in our kitchens.

7.  Hot Toddies

A hot toddy is one of my favorite drinks, but I can’t bring myself to drink them in the summer.  The fall marks a time when I can have this drink after the sun goes down and unwind.  I like to make mine with honey, fresh-squeezed lemon juice, hot water, and Tennessee whiskey.

8.  Football

One of the things I look forward to most about fall is having an excuse to sit on the couch and eat snacks.  Football provides this.  Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy the game very much, especially college football, but what I think I enjoy the most is having  a good excuse to spend my Sunday doing next to nothing.  Try our grilled chicken wings for an awesome tailgating snack.

9.  The Spices

Nutmeg

Fall spices are a flavor truly unique to fall.  Their warming qualities give them a sense of comfort food.  Pumpkin Cookies are a great way to get all of your fall spices in one treat!

10.  Sweater Weather

I have an abundance of sweaters.  I blame Christmas.  When asked what I want for Christmas, I always ask for sweaters.  I think it’s because it’s winter.  Anyway, I look forward the time of year when I can bundle up and be nice and cozy in my favorite sweaters.
