Herb Infused Olive Oil
Be Sociable, Share! TweetTweet Herb Infused Olive Oil I first learned how to infuse olive oil about 3 years ago, when Jeff and I were trying to figure out what to do with the remnants of our summer herb collection. The air was getting colder, and our summer soldiers were not going to last for very much longer. Incidentally, if you would like to know, rosemary does very well inside, provided it gets enough water and light. We always kept the curtains drawn at the Schilling place; because I’m always paranoid someone will want to break in if they see what great stuff we have. (That joke is so dry you’ll have to soak it up with some herb infused oil.) Moving on. Wanting to keep the waste casualties as low as possible, and hoping to have some part of the Oil and Vinegar store without spending a ton of… Continue reading »

Get That Picky Kid to Eat
Be Sociable, Share! TweetTweet For anyone who has a small child, you know that feeding them can be a real nightmare. Most of the food ends up on the tray, the floor, or on the child themselves rather than in their cute little stomach. Every meal is a battle that I go into, fully planning to win, but usually end up waving a white flag because I want my kid to eat something, ANYTHING! You start with good intentions and try to feed them vegetables. Green beans? Yeah, they end up on the floor. Carrots? Smeared all over the tray. And Peas? Don’t kid yourself. Those don’t even make it remotely close to their mouth. So now that you’ve lost the first battle, you move on to the next course where you have a slightly better chance of winning. You go to the trouble to make your child a grilled… Continue reading »

What’s in store for SPF in 2013!
Be Sociable, Share! TweetTweet We hope you all have had a great Holiday vacation! Jeff and I had a nice rest, and we’ve got a lot of great new topics we are really excited to share with you! Here’s what’s in store for SPF in 2013! We are turning our focus to foods that are made from scratch in your home, ergo homemade. I have always thought that if you cook and bake from scratch, you are the chooser of your food destiny, if you will. You control what goes into your food, and that allows you, as the chooser, to leave out as many chemicals, preservatives, and fats as you can. The less you eat processed foods, the better you are. Our continued goal is to transform common calorie bombs into DIY recipes that are good for you and taste good too. As always, we will keep our recipes… Continue reading »

Five Steps to Avoid a Hangover; Four Steps to Cure a Hangover
Be Sociable, Share! TweetTweet Greetings and Happy Holidays! We hope that you all had a wonderful holiday, and that you’re gearing up for a new year. I’d imagine that most healthy eating websites talk about what you should do to eat healthy in the New Year. Not us. No, I think today we will talk to you about hangovers. If you’re in the same boat as most of us, you like to have a good time on New Year’s Eve. The drawback is most of us have to go back to work on the Second. This means you probably want to spend the day before you head back to work relaxing, but that is tough to do with a hangover. Obviously the best solution is taking it easy on New Year’s Eve, but sometimes that’s easier said than done. So, let’s talk about some tips and tricks that you can… Continue reading »
3 Ways to Use Holiday Leftovers
Be Sociable, Share! TweetTweet As you know, we love food. When you make an amazing meal, if you don’t do something with your leftovers, they will spoil. And that sucks. Nothing makes me angrier than spoiled leftovers that you could have eaten, and money down the drain that you could have used. J/K. There are a lot of things that make me angrier. Just ask my husband. It must be the Irish side of me. Or the French. Well anyway, really leveraging your leftovers puts you in a great position to both save money and time. You save a trip or the grocery store (You should only be going once a week, because I know you’re following our menu method.) and that, in turn, keeps you from spending the green. Below, we’ve listed our top three ways to leverage and use holiday leftovers. Because ’tis the season. And if you don’t, you’ll be angry and… Continue reading »

French bread with Balsamic Vinegar and Olive Oil
Be Sociable, Share! TweetTweet French bread with Balsamic Vinegar and Olive Oil The only thing healthy about this week’s recipe is olive oil, which we know is a healthy fat. I had planned to talk about how to save your holiday leftovers, but after yesterday’s tragedy in Connecticut, I don’t feel like talking about cellophane and tin foil. That topic will be saved for another day. I just feel like hugging my husband and trying to work out all of these emotions in my head. My heart is broken for the families that have lost everything. I can’t begin to imagine that kind of loss and realizing your worst fears have come true. My world would cease to exist if my husband or any one of my family was taken so suddenly and so senselessly from me. So today, I am thankful for those I love and all the blessings… Continue reading »

Chicken Curry Salad
Be Sociable, Share! TweetTweet Today’s post is going to be short and sweet. Chicken curry salad sweet. We are continuing our segment on party foods for the Holidays. I love curry flavor. All the ingredients in this salad work so magically with the curry. Just so you know, I edited that last sentence so it didn’t end with a preposition. You’re welcome. This salad is pretty cheap to make too, because you already have most of the stuff in your pantry. If you don’t have almonds in your baking cupboard, you should. Go buy some. And the leftover chicken is basically free. Ingredients: Chopped up left over chicken, about 2 cups 2 tablespoons mayonnaise (if too dry, add more) 2 Celery stalks, diced ¼ cup diced onion 1 cup grapes, halved 2 tablespoons toasted slivered almonds 2 tablespoons shredded coconut 1 ½ teaspoons curry powder Salt and pepper to taste… Continue reading »

6 Tips to Plan a Party on a Budget
Be Sociable, Share! TweetTweet It’s party season folks, and I’m ready to get down! Jeff and I have hosted quite a few parties since we’ve been together. I love hosting parties and, as you know, cooking and eating food. I’ve gathered some of my “infinite wisdom” to pass on to you. 1. Set your budget. This seems like it doesn’t need to be stated, but there have been many times that I haven’t done this, and a party can very easily cost more than you expected. So make sure you set your budget, and stick to it. 2. Use the dollar store to your full advantage. You most likely won’t get a whole lot of use out of those decorations you bought, so make sure that they are at least easy on your pocket book. Unless you have Christmas year-round at your house. In that case, you have my permission to… Continue reading »
